Science
At Bill Quay Primary School, we aim to stimulate a child's curiosity in finding out why things happen in the way they do. We teach methods of enquiry and investigation to stimulate creative thought. Children learn to ask scientific questions and begin to appreciate the way science will affect their future on a personal, national and global level. At the start of each science topic, the children are given a knowledge organiser to help guide them and deepen their understanding of the topic being covered. Each knowledge organiser contains key vocabulary, what they should know by the end of the learning unit, and key concepts being covered within the topic. Interwoven within each unit of learning, are opportunities for children to develop their scientific skills through the five areas of enquiry: pattern seeking, fair testing, comparative testing, secondary research and observation over time. These are carefully mapped out across the academic year, and between age groups, to ensure that the knowledge and skills build and progress as the children move through school.
During the spring term, the whole school takes part in a 'Science Week' where children undertake a variety of investigations linked to a whole school topic. As part of this week, scientists from various backgrounds are invited into school so that our children are able to meet and understand the wide range of opportunities there are within the scientific industry.
