SEND
At Bill Quay Primary School, we believe all our pupils have the right to the highest possible standard of education. Every member of the learning community works together to ensure all pupils feel valued and are able to achieve their goals. Our ethos encourages every individual to flourish and develop their strengths. All pupils, regardless of their particular needs, are offered inclusive teaching, which will enable them to make the best possible progress in school and feel that they are an integral member of the wider school community.
Bill Quay Primary School works within Gateshead Local Authority guidance on provision for children with SEND in mainstream schools. This outlines the way students with additional needs are provided for within school. We also follow our Disability and Equality Policy.
Our school recognises that there are particular groups of pupils whose circumstances require additional consideration by those who work with them to support their SEN. This extra provision and support is provided through Legotherapy, Theraplay, 1:1 Fast Track Tutoring in phonics, Numbers Counts, NELI and nurture groups, in small groups, by trained members of staff. In addition, external support is also available from the RISE Mental Health Team, and some pupils benefit from animals therapy from 'Angela's Ark'.
Children with a specific learning need have an individual plan, with their main barrier for learning identified and targets to support them. Views are regularly sought from parents and pupils, and the plan is reviewed twice yearly, or earlier if the need arises.
Full details of our Complaints Procedure can be found in the Policies section of the website. Any parents of children with SEN who wish to make a complaint should firstly talk to the class teacher. If this does not resolve the issue, parents should then make an official complaint and ask for an appointment to meet with the Head Teacher and SENCO. This meeting should take place within seven days of the complaint being made. If the issue is still not resolved, parents can then contact the Chair of Governors and the Pupils and Curriculum committee. Parents can contact the school by telephone, letter, or in person by appointment via the school office.
