Swimming
Swimming and Water Safety
All schools must provide swimming instruction either in key stage 1 or key stage 2. In particular, pupils should be taught to:
-
swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
-
use a range of strokes effectively [for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke]
-
perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.
2021 – 2022 Year 6 Swimming Attainment
At Bill Quay, we firmly believe in the importance and value of developing skills in swimming, not just for health and enjoyment but also because we know that these skills could one day be life-saving. For most of the school year, our Year 4 and Year 5 children receive specialist swimming lessons at Heworth Leisure Centre. The final half-term of the year focuses on improving swimming skills for those Year 6 pupils who have not yet met the required government standard.
We are required to report the percentage of children who have met the national Curriculum requirements for swimming and water safety.
