Phonics
Phonics is a method of teaching children to read by linking sounds (phonemes) and the symbols that represent them (graphemes). At Bill Quay, we follow the 'Read, Write, Inc.' (RWI) scheme, which is a Department of Education approved complete systematic synthetic phonics programme. We believe that all of our children can become fluent readers and writers. The RWI programme ensures that children build on their growing knowledge of the alphabetic code, mastering phonics to read and spell as they move through school. As a result, our children are able to tackle any unfamiliar words as they read. We also model the application of the alphabetic code through phonics in shared reading and writing, both inside and outside of the phonics lesson and across the curriculum. We have a strong focus on language development for our children because we know that speaking and listening are crucial skills for reading and writing in all subjects.
RWI separates the children's learning into three clear phases called Set 1 sounds, Set 2 sounds and Set 3 sounds. All children in Reception class and Year 1 have a daily phonics lesson and afternoon speed sounds lesson following the 'What to teach when' schedule below. Where a need is identified, children will receive additional support through, for example, pinny time (short, targeted sessions focused on sounds recall) or one-to-one tutoring. In Years 2 and beyond, children will receive phonics teaching and support as required and appropriate to their specific need. You can learn more about how to support your child with their reading at home here.
